How to install Kernel Mode Printer Driver on Windows 2003 Server
When you try to print or connect remotely from a Windows 2003 Server to a shared printer on Windows 2000 Server which is driven by Kernel Mode Driver, the Windows 2003 System will not allow you to install the printer derive and use that shared printer, because in Windows 2003, installation of the so-called kernel-mode drivers is blocked by default. To overcome this problem, you can either ask System Admin to change the Group Policy, or, without System Admin’s help, install the driver manually by yourself:
1. Start -> Printers and Faxes -> Add Printer.
2. Add a Local Printer, uncheck the check box to automatically check and install the plug and play printer (as we DO NOT have that printer locally).
3. Create a name port of type Local Port, named \\server\sharedprinter
4. Then install the Printer Driver Manually on this Windows 2003 machine.
